How did India transform itself from a poor country to one of the richest in the world?

It seems to me that India is THE destination for business right now. Me and my chums were going through the ups and downs of countries and continents and I would very much be interested to know the "macroeconomic changes" that India made to become one of the wealthiest nations and a potential superpower.

1. India changed its policies in the mid 90s.... in the mid 90s, they transformed themselves into a market based economy. It was previously a socialist based economy.... I hope that helped cuz they made a lotta changes in the 90s....
